FACTS ABOUT BREAST CANCER

Simply being a woman and getting older puts you at risk. Other factors that increase your risk include:

  • Personal history of prior breast cancer
  • Evidence of specific cancer genes
  • Family history of breast cancer, especially mothers, sisters and daughters
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Early onset of menstruation (Before 12 years) or late menopause (after 55 years)
  • Obesity
  • Being childless
  • Alcohol consumption

We recommend monthly self breast examinations, regular clinical breast examination after age 30, and mammograms (breast x-rays) every two years after age 40 and every year after age 50.

FACTS ABOUT CERVICAL CANCER

Cancer of the cervix can occur at any age but is more common in women over 40 years. Risk factors include:

  • Having multiple sex partners - or, sex partners who began having sex at a young age, have had multiple sex partners, or have had sex with a woman who had cervical cancer
  • Smoking
  • Having frequent sexual intercourse before age 18
  • Having a weakened immune system
  • A history of the human papilloma virus (HPV)

To detect the possibility of cervical cancer, you should begin having regular pap smears and pelvic exams once you begin having sex or from age 18.
